2024 AGM Highlights: Celebrating Growth and Looking Ahead; Malcolm Bow Elected President

Updated: 1 day ago

On December 7, 2024, the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario (PPBSO) held its Annual General Meeting via Zoom, concluding a transformative year for the organization. Outgoing President Andrew Giles reflected on the Society’s accomplishments, addressed challenges, and outlined a forward-looking vision for 2025.

Key Highlights from 2024

Membership Growth:

The PPBSO’s membership reached 1,114, representing a 12% increase from 2023. Notably, youth now account for 30% of the membership, demonstrating a vibrant future for the Society. To further support families, membership fees for youth under 16 will be reduced by 50% starting in 2025.

Programs and Events:

The Society successfully managed nine Highland Games across Ontario, hosted the Champion Supreme Awards Gala, and supported key events such as the George Sherriff Invitational, Livingstone Invitational, and Glengarry Cup. The inaugural Drummers Summit, held in March, focused on recruiting and engaging new talent, while the "Learn to Play" initiative at the Glengarry Highland Games introduced piping and drumming to younger audiences.

Financial Health:

The PPBSO reported a 20% increase in cash on deposit and a 500% rise in net income compared to 2023, thanks to disciplined financial management. The Society also supported teaching programs with donations to the London Fire Fighters and Hamilton Police Pipe Bands.

Governance Updates:

Significant strides were made in governance, including full compliance with Ontario’s Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) and the modernization of the Society’s bylaws and policies.

Looking Ahead to 2025

The PPBSO’s strategic goals include hosting its first sponsored Highland Games, expanding membership, and introducing innovative technologies such as electronic judging. These initiatives aim to ensure financial sustainability, operational efficiency, and inclusivity for all members.

Acknowledgments and Tributes

The AGM recognized the contributions of key individuals, including Sharon Duthart (Operations Manager), Malkie Bow (Governance Committee Chair), and others who played pivotal roles in the Society’s success. Special recognition was given to Julie Stewart and Jim McGillivray, who were awarded the prestigious Life Membership Award for their decades of exceptional service to the PPBSO and the piping and drumming community.

Elections were held for the role of President and four Directors-at-large who all join the board of Directors of the PPBSO. Elected as President for a two-year term was Malcolm Bow (pictured).  He moves from his role as director-at-large (and member of the Governance Committee) to chief executive.
