At the 2024 Annual General Meeting of the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario (PPBSO), two outstanding members of the piping and drumming community, Julie Stewart and Jim McGillivray, were awarded the prestigious Life Membership Award. This honour is the PPBSO’s highest recognition, reserved for individuals whose decades of exceptional service have made a profound and lasting impact on the Society and its mission.
Julie Stewart
Julie Stewart’s dedication to the PPBSO spans over four decades, during which she has been a tireless advocate for the Society and its traditions. As a long-serving board member and President of the Niagara/Hamilton Branch, Julie’s leadership has been instrumental in strengthening the PPBSO and elevating its profile.
Her efforts have shaped some of the Society’s most celebrated events, including The Livingstone Invitational and The Agnew-Harrison Invitational Solo Drumming Competition, both of which showcase world-class talent. Julie’s work in organizing the Champion Supreme Awards Gala has created lasting memories for members and highlighted the best of our community. Her passion and vision have left an indelible mark on the Society and inspired countless others.
Jim McGillivray
A member of the PPBSO for over five decades, Jim McGillivray has distinguished himself as an exceptional competitor, judge, and mentor. As a soloist and band member, Jim’s achievements are well known, but it is his contributions behind the scenes that have solidified his legacy within the PPBSO.
For over 40 years, Jim has served as a trusted and respected judge, setting a high standard for fairness and excellence in competitions. As Chair of the Music Committee, Jim’s leadership has been pivotal in refining the Society’s musical standards and fostering the growth of the piping and drumming community. His mentorship has guided countless pipers, instilling in them the values of discipline, perseverance, and respect.

In presenting Julie Stewart and Jim McGillivray with the Life Membership Award, the PPBSO honours not only their remarkable achievements but also their embodiment of the values that define our Society.
